Abstract
Some of the problems of workmanship in masonry construction can be avoided by careful design. It is essential to appreciate the tolerances in the manufacture of masonry units and construction on site particularly in hybrid construction using a number of materials. The paper illustrates some defects encountered on site and traces their origin to the design. They include defects caused by inadequate tolerances in a multi-storey block of flats in London. It also illustrates the need for vigilance in inspecting cavity wall construction which poses a number of problems of workmanship.
