Abstract

Cultural heritage preservation is a complex phenomenon and to make precise quantitative risk assessment for historic masonry buildings is very difficult. Due to various characteristics of the masonry used in the construction and the complexity of the structural layout, it is not possible to use new construction approaches in the safety assessment of historic buildings.
There are check lists for evaluating the risk level of the existing concrete and vernacular masonry structures after any natural disaster but pre-hazard risk assessment of historic structures is not common. In cultural heritage preservation, there is crucial need to identify the potential seismic risk of the existing historic buildings for hazard mitigation and limiting the disaster impact.
The aim of this paper is to present the ongoing PhD study which is based on developing a visual inspection form and computer data base system for assessing the pre-hazard risk of historic monumental masonry buildings.
