Abstract

Clay brick has been used as a construction material for more than 5000 years, and still widely used in various places in the world including in Indonesia. Poor knowledge on bricks’ mechanical behavior prompted this research to investigate the shear response of masonry. An experimental study on the shear behavior of local clay bricks from Cikarang-Indonesia has been on 20 brick specimens which each brick embedded to a concrete cubes, 150 x 150 x 150 mm and tested under step by step monotonic loading. The physical characteristics of the bricks are also evaluated. The research outcomes show that the shear modulus of elasticity G is 402.08 N/mm2 within 60.23 % accuracy and the crack failure patterns are mostly in the form of direct shear crack.
