Abstract

Reinforced masonry is presently under development, not only in countries subjected to earthquakes but also in countries where seismic risks are small. The first aim of the research work at the University of Liege was to study fundamentally bond characteristics between grout and block. At the same time the traditional reinforcing system has been compared with a new stirrup orthogonal reinforcing system. The tesls showed that allowable stress design and ultimate limit stale design, already used for the traditional system, are also applicable to the newly developed system. Design recommendations deduced from the tests are given.
