Abstract
The current vogue for structures which are tow cost, durable and maintenance free has led to engineers focusing on non-metallic structures. Current work at the University of Plymouth, into the use of a synthetic material, Parafil, as a prestressing tendon in prestressed masonry structures is described, as is the construction of two footbridges at Tring, one of which involves this form of structure.
