Abstract
This paper summarises the results of a number of investigations into the structural behaviour of cavity walls as revealed by wall tests and by tests designed to examine the interaction between cavity walls and floor slabs. The leaves of the cavity walls were of equal thickness and of the same material. It would appear that a cavity wait axiatly loaded on both leaves will, under ideal conditions, be double the strength of a single leaf wall but, in practice, equal loading or strength of the two leaves is unlikely to be achieved. In most cases the inner leaf wilt be required to transmit the full vertical load. Comparisons are made between the strength of cavity walls and solid walls and reference is made to Code provisions for the design of cavity walls.
