Abstract
The shear behaviour of pocket type sections was simulated by testing fifteen beams under four point loading, varying the brick strength, percentage of tensile reinforcement and shear span ratio. Shear failure is difficult to achieve in a pocket type section and each of the three parameters has an effect on the failure mode and load carrying capacity of a beam. The flexural results compare favourably with the draft British Standard for Reinforced and Prestressed Masonry although the characteristic shear strengths given there are unduly conservative for pocket type members.
