Abstract
The earthquake performance of partially reinforced masonry walls when subjected to cyclic loading is examined. The objective is to be able to construct earthquake resistant low-rise partially reinforced masonry buildings in areas of moderate seismic activity in Greece. This paper includes an overview of the earthquake performance of partially reinforced walls employing a “Greek” type brick, which is now commercially available. Similarly, the rest of the materials employed in the construction of the masonry walls examined is also currently available in Greece. The observed behaviour in terms of horizontal load bearing capacity as well as the dominant modes of response and damage is acceptable when the appropriate combination of longitudinal and transverse reinforcement as well as the minimum strengths of mortar, grout and brick unit are employed. Moreover, the importance of complying with established construction practices for reinforced masonry must also be emphasized.
