Abstract

Bed-joint reinforcement incorporated in the top courses of 5.5m long single-leaf storey-height walls of calcium silicate brickwork, which were otherwise unsupported at the top, was found to enhance the strength of the wall to resist lateral loads by stiffening the top edge. Small panels have also been tested and the relationship between strength enhancement and the degree of reinforcement determined.
