Abstract
The paper introduces professionals within the construction Industry to the general concepts of sustainability and sustainable development. The complex nature of the different issues underpinning sustainability are briefly outlined and the difficulties associated with identifying and quantifying what is sustainable, in absolute terms, are discussed with reference to masonry walling. The principal framework for evaluating the sustainability of construction materials and different forms of building construction within the UK, including clay brickwork and concrete blockwork walling, is reviewed.
