Abstract. The tectonic depression, which occurred in the Dinarides during the Miocene, caused the formation of the freshwater lakes and travertine limestone. It is interesting in terms of research and exploitation of architectural and building stone, as they have been exploited and used since ancient times on the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H).The tradition of building with fresh water (lake) limestone in B&H is long, especially construction with “tenelija” and “miljevina (mudstone)”, which are easily processed (especially in the presents of natural moisture), but they are not polished and they do not receive effulgence. These are soft rocks of carbonate composition with the characteristics of high porosity, small density, relatively low strengths and poor wear resistance, low resistance to frost. In order to analyse the influence of layers (planes of anisotropy – foliation) of the mudstone standard tests, as per European Norms and ISRM were conducted. Mechanical characteristics were determined in respect to the layer direction (parallel and perpendicular to the layer direction). From uniaxial compressive strength on cube and cylinder specimens, flexural strength under concentrated load, flexural strength under constant moment, Brazilian tests. Results have been compared and correlations established.
