Abstract
The paper includes case studies of remedial works carried out in recent years and gives details of special brackets designed to support brick slips on concrete nibs; repairs to the concrete nibs with insufficient bearing for panels of brickwork; under-pinning of walls to remove mortar droppings; replacement wall lies and the introduction of movement joints to relieve stresses and reduce the risk of subsequent cracking. Problems associated with remedial type wall ties in hollow blocks; low strength concrete blockwork and the danger of using chemical anchors with insufficient quality control and site testing. The paper also includes details of a system used for reinforcing existing masonry walls subjected to settlement; creep and rotation of supporting concrete flat slab type floors. Problems experienced with stainless steel wall ties and bricks of FL designation are discussed and recommendations made for tighter British Standard requirements.
