A non-linear interpretation of the limit state behaviour of rectangular masonry sections subject to singly eccentric compressive forces is presented. The strain distribution across the section is taken to be linear whilst the stress-strain relationship for the material is assumed to be parabolic. Tensile strength is considered to be insignificant in comparison with the compressive strength. Axial thrust/bending moment interaction loci corresponding to static limit state and prevention of cracking criteria are generated and discussed in the context of established practice; particular attention is paid to familiar linearly based formulae, masonry arch studies and design to BS 5628: Part 1. The non-linear studies suggest present service load restrictions appertaining to laterally loaded masonry walls to be non-conservative and afford moment-thrust relationships applicable to masonry arch bridge limit state mechanisms.
