Abstract
Nowadays, the use of flat blocks joined by thin mortar joints (1 to 3mm thick) represents one of the more promising construction systems for load bearing masonry walls. The easier execution in comparison with the traditional system allows a significant reduction of construction time and quantity of mortar, with very favorable consequences on the total costs. In this paper, the results of a comparative experimental study carried out on the new system and on ordinary masonry are presented. Mechanical tests have been carried out on masonry specimens to clarify the behaviour both under compression and shear loads. The main results are discussed, as well as the effectiveness of special mortars and different methods for the execution of thin joints.
