Abstract
The performance of reinforced masonry is significantly dependent on the quality of construction. Inspection of masonry by an independent observer is one method to verify the construction quality. The latest United States masonry Standard referenced by the International Building Code, Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures (ACI 530-05/ASCE 5-05/TMS 402-05), requires various levels of inspection depending on the method of design and use of the building. Many components of masonry construction are not visible with the completed product, such as grout and reinforcing steel in hollow unit masonry, yet the system performance significantly depends on proper quality and installation of these materials.
This paper will present the evolution of reinforced masonry inspection and critical issues related to the inspection process. Inspection tables of Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures will be assessed and compared with inspection requirements that existed prior to current model code provisions. Suggestions will be provided on making the quality assurance process a team effort rather than an adversarial confrontation.
