Abstract

The paper gives results of 14 tests to examine the strength and mode of failure of unreinforced flat and shallow arches and lightly reinforced, flat arches built using two types of soft mud stock bricks. Arches were tested to failure under a uniformly distributed load. Arch span was 2.08 m with shallow arches also having 3 m span and rise between 245—450 mm. Data is presented on brickwork stresses and arch deflections. Cracking patterns and failure mode are discussed. Comparisons are made with previously reported data.
