Abstract
Flexural tests on reinforced perforated clay unit masonry (vertical holes >35%) under monotonic and cyclic loading have been carried out at the Institut fur Bauforschung (IBAC) in Aachen. This type of masonry is not covered by the current German standard. One aim of these tests was the derivation of appropriate design rules as a basis for the extension of the existing national technical approval for vertically perforated clay units in reinforced masonry. The results show that the use of bed joint reinforcement leads to a significant increase of the ultimate moment compared with unreinforced masonry. The moisture content of the unit has a significant influence on both flexural and out of plane shear strength. Unfilled perpend joints have only a slight influence on the out of plane shear strength, at least under monotonic loading. The design rules for out of plane shear given in DIN1053:Part 3 can be applied to reinforced vertically perforated clay unit masonry with general purpose and lightweight mortars. Basic values for bond between mortar and reinforcement are available. Proposals for design rules derived from these tests are presented and discussed.
