Abstract

The proneness of arch masonry structures to collapse is, in most cases, dependent on the activation of cracking mechanisms due to the formation of a number of unilateral hinges. This paper gives an experimental validation of the benefitsproduced in a damaged masonry portal arch under the action of a horizontal load.by the application of continuous mono-directional strips of carbon fibre reinforced polymers (FRP). Laboratory tests show that the application of C-fibre reinforcement normally gives an excellent increase in the loading capacity of the structure.
