Abstract

This review of the literature shows the effects of various factors on the flexural strength of brick masonry. The ratios of the strengths of 1:1:6 mortar to stronger mortars are indeterminate, but those for weaker mortars can be estimated with reasonable precision. Other factors, the effects of which can be established, include water retentivity of the mortar, mortar flow rate, initial rate of suction of the bricks, and curing conditions. The effect of docking bricks of high suction rate needs more research.
