Abstract
A series of tests to determine the bursting strength of cellular brickwork construction is described; the influence of brick type, mortar strength and the use of bed joint reinforcement were investigated. Bed joint reinforcement was found to produce a significant increase in the bursting strength of brickwork made of low strength, high porosity clay bricks laid in a high cement content mortar. Even when high strength bricks are specified, the use of bed joint reinforcement in the webs is recommended to reduce the risk of an in-plane tension failure.
