Abstract

Masonry often suffers from weak bond and low flexural strength. Thus, consistently better bond and bond strength would improve masonry. Noting I he presence of lime and the effect of pozzolans on lime, varying amounts of fly ash were introduced to masonry mortar to enhance bond strength. Statistically significant increases in bond strength were noted at 28, 90 and 180 days with 20% substitution of fly ash in the cementitious materials. This work examined the unit/mortar interface with emphasis on the effect of microstructural features on the resulting mechanical properties.
