Abstract
This paper examines the energy dissipation characteristics of brick masonry tested under uniaxial cyclic compressive loading. The energy dissipated per cycle of loading/unloading is expressed as a dimensionless energy dissipation ratio, EDT, which is defined as the ratio of the energy dissipated to the total stored strain energy per cycle. Graphs of the EDT ratio versus the envelope strain at the peak of each cycle and the EDT ratio versus the plastic strain at unloading are presented. Simple empirical relationships are also suggested. The test results used in this paper are based on an experimental programme conducted on prototype brick masonry specimens and half scale brick masonry models.
