Abstract
The paper derives from first principles analytical expressions for axial and bending stiffness properties of masonry walls exhibiting a parabolic stress-strain relationship in compression. It is demonstrated that for non-linear stress-strain properties, the axial and bending stiffnesses interact, and have to be expressed as a 2×2 stiffness matrix. The establishment of the actual stiffness properties is a vital pre-requisite for numerical analysis of masonry structures.
