Abstract
The deformation of masonry walls loaded in two directions, that is perpendicular to the bed and header faces, has been compared. Experimental test data are reported for a test duration of 220d for clay brick, calcium silicate brick and concrete block walls built with the same type of mortar (1: 1.5 :4.5). Anisotropic behaviour of deformation of masonry was found to depend on the anisotropy of the unit and the relative quantity of mortar and unit. For example, the modulus of elasticity of the clay brickwork was greater in the bed face direction by 50%, which is mainly attributed to the stiffness of the brick being greater between the bed faces. On the other hand, the modulus of elasticity of the calcium silicate brickwork was greater in the header face direction by 20% because of relatively less mortar in the horizontal direction.
