Abstract
Sieve gradings (including fines contents), methylene blue adsorption values and sand equivalents of spot samples of 154 buildings sands, taken from throughout the United Kingdom, are presented together with data from a variability study of two of the sources. The results are discussed in the light of current British Standards for building sands and of the draft European Standard for mortar sands. The tatter’s use of so-called “typical” gradings, without any guidance on how to assess these, is shown to be inapplicable to an inherantly variable material such as building sand. The limits for methylene blue adsorption being proposed by CEN could lead to problems for UK producers and users of building sands.
