Abstract
The aim is to present the methods of investigation used to inspect the structural strength of a very important historical building. It was necessary to make structural measurements in relation to the restoration and modification of the building. The primary requirement was not to affect the structure to be analysed. Nondestructive methods were therefore chosen to investigate and measure the static conditions. The specially produced flat-jack was tested to ensure reliable measurements. The value obtained must be corrected by a coefficient determined in the Engineering Laboratory of the University “La Sapienza” in Rome.
