Abstract

An experimental research program was undertaken to ascertain the compressive and shear strength enhancement of masonry wall panels using post-tensioned plastic strapping. Plastic strapping constitutive is Polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The study includes twelve wall panels, three each for diagonal tension (shear) evaluation pursuant to ASTM E 519-02 test method. Diagonal testing method is chosen because both compressive and lateral loading effects could be scrutinized. During the test observation were recording all important parameters like stress-strain, vertical load deflection, lateral load deflection and behavior of post-tensioned plastic straps. Load carrying mechanisms were observed, varying from the initial, un-cracked state, to the final, fully cracked state. The results demonstrate that a significant increase in both vertical and horizontal displacements in comparison with un-strengthened masonry wall panels. It is concluded on the basis of experimental work that the technique /approach is viable for rehabilitation of old deteriorating buildings and strengthening of unreinforced masonry structures in seismic zones.
