Abstract

Although the mechanism of fatigue from high-cycle loading on masonry arch bridges is not well understood at the present time, the results of available research suggest that under such loading masonry has fatigue strength significantly less than its static ultimate carrying capacity. The need for serviceability limits of masonry arch bridges has led to increasing interest in the high-cycle fatigue performance of masonry.
This paper presents a review of experimental studies carried out into the high-cycle fatigue behaviour of brick masonry and conclusions are drawn from the reported studies.
