Abstract
The life cycle cost of roads and similar paved areas surfaced with flexibly bedded pavers is considered in terms of initial construction cost, maintenance costs and salvage value and compared with that for asphalt concrete. Even when a cost analysis is not mandatory, calculations are important because an apparently cost effective solution on first cost is often found uneconomic when maintenance and salvage costs are accounted for. The data can be applied to many categories of project and used in deciding between different pavement surfacing materials. A discount rate of 5% is used to evaluate the present worth of a future cost as a basis of comparison. All costs are normalised to those at the time of initial construction.
