Abstract
Eighty first year students were taken directly to a site at the very beginning of their five to seven years at university. Eleven walls were built by the students in groups of seven or eight each. The basic materials made available were bricks plus stone, earth, wood etc. A total of up to eight days per student were spent on site. The average size of a wall was about 5 m long, 0.5m wide, 0.8m high. These few days on site tackling real construction problems will be a long lasting experience for all the students. It is hoped that what they learnt will inform all their future knowledge of building walls.
