Abstract
The paper presents the results of an experimental investigation into the behaviour of laterally loaded, single leaf and cavity brickwork panels, with and without openings. Ten full-scale panels, associated wallettes and constituent materials were tested. The results were compared to yield line and a finite element analysis. The results justified predictions made using the nonlinear finite element analysis. They further indicated that for some panels yield line analysis tended to over-estimate the flexural strength of brickwork and that use of BS5628:Part If]} cannot always safely predict the collapse load.
