Abstract
This paper looks at the sustainablity of masonry construction in the context of the U.K. ‘s national sustainable development strategy. It identifies the key issues which need to be addressed in order to provide a coherent industry response to the challenge of sustainable development. The paper concentrates on Life Cycle costs for masonry structures under the broad headings of First Cost, Maintenance and Design Life. Attention is drawn to the methodologies currently being developed to quantify and assess the life cycle costs of buildings and their components. Reference is also made to the development of Environmental Profiles of Construction Materials. The paper discusses the relevance of existing information regarding masonry performance and the way that this may be used to demonstrate the sustainability of masonry construction.
