This investigation was undertaken to show the influence of an unloaded leaf on the load-carrying capacity of a cavity wall and the magnitude of that influence. Tests on 23 full-scale cavity and single walls have been performed. The cavity walls consist of a vertically loaded lightweight concrete element leaf and an outer masonry leaf without vertical load. The results are evaluated in relation to test results achieved during periodic testing of the lightweight concrete elements in accordance with DS 433. A simple approach is presented to account for the improved load carrying capacity due to the outer leaf.
