The construction and real estate industry plays a key role for a sustainable social and economic development. Due to their large share in the building stock, residential buildings have an extraordinary importance. Thus, by doing a holistic, life-cycle orientated examination the Institute for Concrete and Masonry Structures at Darmstadt University of Technology analysed, what level of sustainability quality residential buildings made of masonry have with regards to the common German sustainability assessment methodologies like the Deutsches GÃ¼tesiegel Nachhaltiges Bauen. This paper gives a holistic overview about the essential importance of masonry concerning the establishment of principles of sustainable constructions and presents the key findings of the analysis of different building types.
