Trends in the construction industry have led to housing incorporating features which comply with the recommendations now contained in Approved Document A1J2, formerly Schedule 7, to the Building Regulations but which differ significantly from those traditional features which formed the basis of the recommendations. In order to study the effects of the perceived trends on the robustness of housing built in accordance with the approved document, a range of tests have been carried out on a laboratory constructed two-storey house. The implications of the results of these tests have been considered in relation to the recommendations in the Building Regulations. Generally, with the exception of the wind suction tests where a full interpretation of the results is not possible, the results confirm that the recommendations in the Approved Document are conservative.
