Abstract

The theory of elasticity is often applied to the design of masonry structures. For such applications it is necessary to know the modulus of elasticity and the ultimate strength. It has been found convenient to introduce several values of the modulus of elasticity depending on the design situation. A standard test method has been developed for NORDTEST. It may be used to develop values of other tangent moduli commonly used in design theories. The curved stress-strain diagram for the material is approximated both by a parabola and a logarithmic curve called the RITTER curve. The two alternatives are compared with reference to the rules given in the Eurocode for masonry structures.
