Abstract

The paper gives an overview of selected recent developments in the field of seismic design criteria for new masonry buildings, drawing mainly from researches and coordinated projects carried out in Italy and Europe, with main reference to the recent technologies and materials. In the first part, some code-related design issues are discussed with reference to the Italian norms and Eurocodes. In the second part, some significant outcomes of recent research projects on unreinforced and reinforced masonry systems are reported. Their possible interaction with design code regulations and suggestions for code improvement are discussed.
