Abstract
For the design of short reinforced masonry columns BS 5628 gives three cases, I for low values of axial load, 2 the general case and 3 an alternative to Case 2 for large eccentricities. Interaction diagrams have been developed to assist with the design for Case 2. The number of diagrams required depends on the combinations of design parameters to form non-dimensional groups. This paper shows that five charts using different values of the depth to the reinforcement, are sufficient. The charts can be used for all three cases; each chart shows the relevant case for the particular loading. The number of charts could be extended to allow for unsymmetrical reinforcement. The paper also includes a set of examples, using the same value of axial load but varying the moment so that the solutions progress through the cases.
