The paper gives a short overview about the fire resistance requirements in Germany and the contents of the German National Annex to EN 1996-1-2. Results of fire tests according to EN 1365-1 (walls) und EN 1365-4 (columns) recently carried out in Germany to verify the performance of clay unit masonry in highly insulated multi-storey buildings, i.e. with combustible external thermal insulation composite systems (ETICS) are presented. All tested specimens easily met the maximum requirements for multi-storey buildings applicable in Germany, i.e. R90, REI90 or REI90-M respectively. Results are compared with the ranges of tabulated data for group 2 and group 3 units in EN 1996-1-2 and proposals for modifications are made.
