The paper presents discrete numerical model of bed joint reinforced masonry. In the mortar and brick material model, the five-parameter Willam-Warnke failure criteria are used. All parameters of the failure criteria are obtained from tests on mortar and brick samples. To estimate the position of the tensile and compressive meridians of the failure surface investigations of tri-axial compressive strength and uni-axial compressive and tensile strength of mortar and brick were made. Reinforcing steel as a linear element with Huber-Mises-Hencky ideal plasticity failure surface was modelled.
In the model presented, contact elements on the edge of the mortar and bricks in bed joints were used. This allows the Coulomb-friction effect to be simulated.
The results of the numerical simulation showed general agreement with the experimental results in the failure strength, the level of cracking and the failure mode.
