Abstract

This paper describes the dynamic response of a scaled unframed 1.7 m x 1 m X 0.1 m brick wall with 735 kg of mass on top to the horizontal base acceleration simulated by the Shake Table at Imperial College. The horizontal, vertical and transverse accelerations at different points on the wall were measured. The input intensity was increased until the first cracks at the horizontal base joint and subsequently diagonal cracks occurred. By comparing the input and output accelerations the dynamic behaviour of the wall was investigated and a method for estimating the dynamic shear strength of the brick wall established.
