Abstract
An accurate study of ancient masonry structural behaviour involves mechanical characterization of components, mortars and stone units. As part of a research programme aimed at determining the mechanical properties of tuff stone masonry, this work presents the results of a large number of laboratory tests on both prismatic and cubic specimens, to evaluate the variation of uniaxial compressive strength in different test conditions. Variables considered were dimensions of specimen, moisture conditions, friction between testing machine platen and specimen.
