Time-dependent effects in masonry were studied by experimental tests on small scale panels and on wallettes obtained from the ruins of a medieval building (Civic Tower of Pavia). The paper is centred upon coupling effects between damage and inelastic strains due to persistent loads. A numerical model for finite element analysis has been developed. It includes a Maxwell chain to account for the action of persistent loads and a damage evolution law to consider the decrease of stiffness and/or strength typical of mortar. Numerical tests are reported and the comparisons with experimental data denote a satisfactory performance of the material model.
