Abstract
In Continental Europe thin joint mortar is well established as a means of bonding Aircrete and other lightweight blocks and, in recent years, has been used for brickwork and dense blockwork. This contrasts with the UK where thin joint masonry is only widely established in the context of Aircrete blocks. This paper examines the potential benefits and technical requirements for extending the use of thin joint mortar to brickwork and dense concrete blockwork in the UK. Recent research at Kingston University indicates that thin glue mortar joints in brick and dense concrete block masonry can significantly enhance the tensile, flexural and compressive strength of the composite. Thermal and acoustic properties can also be enhanced but practical issues need to be given further consideration.
