Announcement and Call for Papers

The BMS International Masonry Conference was established as part of the International Calendar of masonry conferences and attracts papers and participants from the masonry countries of the world.

Previous conferences have been held in 1986,1989, 1992, 1995, 1998 and 2002 under the BMS banner and follow British Ceramic Society Conferences held from 1964 to 1983.

Call for Papers

This is your opportunity to report on original work you have done; the papers will be refereed and issued in Proceedings to be available at the Conference.

Please register your interest either by completing and mailing the form below to the Secretary, or emailing the Secretary, kenneth@fisher5053.fsnet.co.uk giving details of paper(s) that you hope to present.

Original Papers are invited on the following subjects:

• New codes and regulations
• Masonry restoration, repair, rehabilitation and refurbishment
• Masonry and the environment
• Innovative masonry
• Earthquake resistance
• Upgrading masonry for earthquake loading
• Masonry construction and practice
• Masonry properties and performance eg. thermal, acoustic, fire resistance to chemicals, durability
• Architectural masonry
• Civil engineering applications of masonry
• Masonry research and testing
• Quality assurance of masonry
• Masonry training/education
• Case studies

Papers will be required to be submitted in electronic form (including figures) to a style and format that will be notified to authors whose Abstracts have been accepted. Papers will be included in the Proceedings only if at least one of the authors registers for the Conference.

The venue is home to the Institution of Civil Engineers. Built between 1910 and 1913, the exterior, foyer and grand staircase are constructed of Portland stone.
Situated in Westminster, it is surrounded by some of London’s best known landmarks – The Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and St James’s Park, and near to Westminster Bridge and the River Thames.
Transport links are close by, with Westminster underground station just two minutes walk away and St James’s Park underground station only five minutes away, giving easy access to mainline railway stations.

International Masonry Society 2015 Student Award Winners

The second International Masonry Society Student Awards have been made.There were two categories, one for undergraduates and one for postgraduate students.
Following the recommendations of the judging panel, awards have been made in each category.
In the Undergraduate category, two awards were made, both of which were Highly Commended, to each student as follows:

  • Timothy Hancox, a student at the School of Engineering at the University of Bolton, for his paper 'Assessment and Improvement of Structural Performance of Residential Masonry Dwellings Subjected to Seismic Loading in Haiti'. His submission was nominated by his academic tutor, Dr Abbes Berrais.

  • Samuel Cocking, an undergraduate in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge, and nominated by his academic tutor, Dr Matthew Dejong,
    for his project 'The Effect of Wind on the Loading and Vibration of Stone Pinnacles'.

In the Postgraduate category, two awards were also made, both being Highly Commended as follows:

  • Dr Shahriar Agaajani from the University of Luxembourg, for his paper 'Numerical Analysis for the determination of Stress Percolation in Dry-Stacked Wall Systems', nominated by his supervisor, Professor Daniele Waldmann, in the Facutly of Sciences, Technology and Communication.

  • Mohammadmahdi Daryadel, a student in the School of Mechanical, Space and Civil Engineering, University of Manchester, for his entry 'Optimisation of FRP Strengthening Systems for Masonry Arch Bridges', nominated by his supervisor, Dr Lee Cunningham.

Each student will received £150 prize, a certificate and free Society membership for a year.

No recommendation was made in 2015 for the Arnold Hendry Award.

21-24 August 2016 ~ Conference ‘Materials, Systems and Structures in Civil Engineering’, Copenhagen

The conference and doctoral course Materials, Systems and Structures in Civil Engineering will be held in Lyngby, Denmark at the campus of the Technical University of Denmark. The full event is a part of the RILEM week 2016 and consists of a series of parallel and consecutive conference and doctoral course segments on different topics. It includes a segment on Historical Masonry. Each conference or doctoral course segment will function as individual events, but they will also have relations to other segments of the full event.
