President's Report for 2004/5
REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT
2004/2005
I take pleasure in producing this short report as I have enjoyed my all too brief presidential year. The burdens of office have been few indeed, a function of the professionalism and commitment of Dr Ken Fisher, whose services we are fortunate to enjoy. Mr Phil Wood also ensured that our finances were administered smoothly and efficiently. In addition, I pay tribute to the members of council who gave so freely of their time. In a world where time pressures are both paramount and inescapable, the time given so generously was greatly appreciated and perhaps sums up one of the core strengths of the society.
Nevertheless, in my view, even though we are a professional body enjoying such a fortunate circumstance, we must continue to strive for a structure and operational procedures that are appropriate to the very best modern business practice. This becomes perhaps even more important as the aging demographic membership profile and industry consolidation place external pressures on the membership not only of our society but also on those of virtually all similarly placed professional bodies. We have to respond, to meet the needs of present and potential members and implement best practice at all times.
My predecessor, Dr John Moore, was vigorous in his efforts to address some of these issues and produced a most useful paper indicating ways in which we could progress. We are now seeking to address the issues and we have already made the decision to move forward with major Website enhancements in partnership with Kingston University. I wish to widen these initiatives still further, to build on John’s platform. We are fortunate in that our incoming president Geoff Edgell also has a vibrant vision with respect to these areas and I have no doubt that he will be resolute in progressing them on your behalf.
Our nominated President-Elect Cliff Fudge has this year organised a series of joint seminars on aspects of the building regulations, to take place at three venues throughout the country, and I ask members to support and to help publicise these. To do so will both raise the profile of the society and produce valuable extra income.
Finally, I thank once again all who have assisted with the work of the society during the past year.
